For HANA, volunteering is one way that people from the local community can be involved, giving them the opportunity to become representatives for BME communities. We welcome the involvement of volunteers in our organisation because of the unique qualities they bring. A ‘Volunteer’ is defined as someone who commits time and energy for the benefit of others, who does so freely, through personal choice and without expectation of financial reward, except for the payment of actual out of pocket expenses. |

Hate crime is a reality for many people in our region who do not always find the right support to deal with hate crime offences. HANA has been a hate crime reporting centre for quite some time, but we have not had the resources to employ staff to deal with specific incidents. With the support of Equalities and Human Rights Commission, HANA has started the Open Up project which will reduce the impact of hate crime by providing effective mechanisms to support the needs of victims, raise awareness of the impact of certain crimes against particular groups and pool existing resources to maximise the reach and influence of support services. | |
